James E. Carter has spent more than four decades making live performance work โ€” as a lighting designer, director, writer, production stage manager, and technical director across Broadway, Off-Broadway, television, concerts, and film.

His theater credits include Your Arms Too Short to Box with God, Smokey Joe’s Cafรฉ, Mama I Want to Sing, and Sophisticated Ladies. He has designed and managed touring productions for Usher, Monica, Faith Evans, Zhanรฉ, and SWV, and worked at the Apollo Theater, Jazz at Lincoln Center, The Billie Holiday Theatre, PIX11, and Good Morning America at ABC โ€” where his work earned a 2016โ€“2017 Emmy Award. He is also an AUDELCO Award winner for Best Lighting Design, with additional recognition in cinematography and documentary film.
